There’s little question that the DOOM series is one of the most iconic franchises in video game history. The first DOOM title, released on MS-DOS in 1993, is considered to be one of the games that birthed the first-person shooter genre and led to its mainstream acceptance. And with the international success of the modern soft reboot of the series, DOOM 2016 and Doom Eternal, it’s little wonder that many gamers count the franchise among their favorites.

With the consternation that has accompanied Sony’s recent announcement that it will be closing down the PlayStation Store for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita, eliminating in one fell swoop players’ ability to purchase digital versions of older games, it may be reassuring to know that the physical versions of some older games will still be available on one console or another.

For this reason, it’s undoubtedly welcome news that Limited Run Games will be releasing DOOM: The Classics Collection, a physical copy of DOOM, DOOM 2, and DOOM 3, on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Pre-orders for all editions of the collection will open on Friday, April 2 and close on May 2, 2021. Unfortunately, as the publisher’s name implies, there may only be a limited number of copies available and, once those are gone, that’s it.

There will be three versions of DOOM: The Classics Collection released: Classic Edition, Special Edition, and Collector’s Edition. All versions will come with a reversible cover that displays the original box art for DOOM on one side and DOOM 2 on the other. The Classic Edition will retail for $29.99 and will contain simply the game cartridge or disk. It’s not yet clear whether the Classic Edition will be available for a limited time.

The Special Edition of DOOM: The Classics Collection will retail for $79.99 and include the game, a metal keycard replica, a USB drive in the shape of a DOOM 3.5” floppy disk, a SteelBook case, a PVC keychain in the shape of Doom Guy’s helmet, a reprint of the original 1996 DOOM comic book, and three 9x6-inch art prints of the box art for DOOM, DOOM 2, and DOOM 3. The $129.99 Collector’s Edition will come with everything in the Special Edition, as well as a DOOM shadowbox complete with lights and MIDI game music.

The DOOM games put players in the role of a nameless space marine popularly dubbed Doom Guy, who fights his way relentlessly through hordes of demons invading from Hell. Although expanded upon with DOOM 2016 and 2020's DOOM Eternal, the original games featured minimal story, and players battled their way through multiple 3D labyrinthine levels armed only with a variety of weapons and determination.

DOOM: The Classics Collection will be released for Switch and PS4.
